Product review: ZenMed Skin Eraser scar treatment

If you know me ZenMed skin eraser kit - somanylovelythingsa little bit, you will probably know about my history with acne, and how it affected my life (and still does), as not long ago, I decided to talk about the fight with my acneic skin.

After being through it all, even when I am spot free (quite rare lately!), the scars are a constant reminder of how terrible it was, and no amount of make -up can conceal the feeling it brings me every time I take real notice of them. I kinda got used to them and learnt to ignore them most of the times, but some days is hard and I am more sensitive to the issue.

Even though I will end up doing laser re-surfacing at some point, I am always willing to explore less dramatic (and costly) ways of improving a bit, even though I know laser is the only way they will almost vanish.

I was thrilled to be contacted by ZenMed, an American company which creates all sorts of solutions for problematic skin – acne, eczema, rosacea and of course, scarring – to try one of their lines on my skin.

The Skin Eraser kit reached me and I could not wait to try it. It consists of an exfoliating product, the Renewing Microdermabrasion Complex (which contains Purified Water, Montmorillonite, Ground Walnut Shells, Zinc Oxide, Glycerin, Extracts of Chamomile, Sea Kelp, Sage, Coltsfoot, Yarrow, Balm Mint, Rosemary, Althea, Wild Thyme and Horsetail, Vitamin B5, C and E, Allantoin, Algin, Glyceryl Stearate, Phenoxyethanol and Ethyl Hexyl Glycerin) and a serum, the Skin Eraser (which contains Purified Water, Ascorbic Acid, Glycerin, Glycolic Acid, Sclerotium Gum, Lactic Acid, Allantoin, Sodium PCA, Panthenol, Sodium Alginate, Phenoxyethanol and Ethyl Hexyl Glycerin).

To start with, what I liked about the company is that they are very attentive. After shipping was confirmed, I received emails with detailed instructions on how to best use the products. I also had a couple questions which were answered quickly and efficiently by the 24-hour helpline chat on their website.

Basically, you scrub then apply the serum. No secret. First, you need to use the products on an adaptation phase; in one week, use it a couple of times and leave the serum for a minute maximum. After that, use it for five days in a row, leaving the serum on overnight. Then, you should have a five-day break so the skin can regenerate. The “course” or “cycle” should then be re-started – five days on, five off. This review is based on three courses, so 30 days.

The scrub is on the right side of tough – you should lightly scrub each small area of the face (or other treated area) for 15-20 seconds, then move on to another. Then I apply a thin layer of serum – three pumps is enough to cover the face. If you had any acid peels before, you will be familiar with the colour and texture of the serum.

And there is no redness, no itchness, no dryness and flaking, which are usually present in these treatments. I was very impressed! I did feel some tingling on areas I had blemishes and the skin is certainly more sensitive at the end of the 5 day-course, but nothing uncomfortable or visible.

By the end of the second “cycle”, I started to draw my first conclusions on the treatment. I saw someone in the office who I hadn’t seen in a while and she commented on my skin. I NEVER get comments about my skin looking good. She asked if I had changed my make up, as my face looked smoother and brighter. I was happy.

That prompted me to get pictures taken, a day before I was due to. And what a surprise! Skin looked so much calmer, less redness in scars. Some of the scars actually seemed smoother and my face looked brighter. The biggest improvement I noticed was on pigmentation – those dark marks left behind after a spot goes were practically gone, all over, even old ones – some take months to go naturally!

After finishing the third course, on which I experienced a little bit more improvement. One thing is sure: for my skin, it seemed to work. Of course, I wasn’t expecting to have baby bottom, supermodel airbrushed skin restored to my scarred face, but I still had a lot of expectations: I was looking for something that would improve the aspect and texture of my skin, make the scars less visible (easier to conceal with make-up), bring a bit of brightness and smoothness to my face, make make-up sit better and at times reduce the amount of make-up needed. And I got that to a degree, and that’s why I am continuing the treatment! I have plenty to keep going for quite a while.

ZENMED Skin eraser before and after - somanylovelythings

The pictures don’t quite capture it; I am quite impressed with the results, but it is always worth bearing in mind that they happened subtly and progressively. I am definitely keeping the treatment going, and it’s very likely I will order another kit. I am not blemish free, and been trying new things to stop them appearing; it is a constant battle.

For £45 a pop, this is a great buy. This is a very small investment on a product that has given me some improvement on the most sensitive issue I have, and that is something.

Worth mentioning I also got the Oil-free Day Lotion and really liked this moisturiser. It has no fragrance, it is very light, absorbs really well, sits great under make-up and has a really soothing effect. It is a shame it hasn’t got an SPF!

ZenMed is also a cruelty free company, all their products are made in the USA, with 100% recyclable packaging (they don’t use boxes, as I mentioned before, and their packaging is fuss free, clean and effective, which I like).

You can get hold of the ZenMed Skin Eraser kit  and the Oil-free Day Lotion on the ZenMed website – they also have an extensive range of medical cosmetics to treat active acne, rosacea and eczema. Very worth considering.

Product review: balance Me skin bright hydrating face mist

balance me hydrating face mist - somanylovelythingsWhen the balance Me skin bright hydrating face mist came my way after the Vevie pop-up shop event, I actually had been thinking about getting a facial mist for a while.

My skin gets quite dry in the office and I usually go to the gym in my lunch break, so a mist seemed the perfect way to keep my face fresh all day, without having to spend too much time washing and moisturising.

The balance Me mist is nicely packaged in a glass bottle which has a great atomiser delivering a very light mist, which is quickly absorbed by the skin. The smell is very delicate, kinda sweet but herb-y and doesn’t stick around. It does not interfere with the make up, freshening the skin up and taking the dry edge away instantly.

I also found it very useful at the beach – I was carrying it in my beach bag every day and spraying in between sunscreen applications, to keep myself fresh and hydrated.

It contains “hyaluronic acid which holds more than 100 times its weight in water; replenishing and balancing pineapple and rose floral water and revitalising neroli and spikenard essential oils.”

The skin bright hydrating face mist retails for £20 (60ml which go a long way!) and you can buy this and other natural, high-performance, paraben and sulphate free, aromatherapy skincare and made in the UK (phew!) on the balance Me website.

Nails of the week: blue with silver dots

dielle nail polish in modern goddess - somanylovelythingsNow the dotting tools are out, I cannot stop! This week I tried a vintage inspired mani, but failed. Miserably. It looked awful. So I decided to take a step back and simplify.

Took the opportunity to try the beautiful Dielle nail polish in Modern Goddess, a deep midnight blue, glittery (but with no texture), with hints of purple, part of their metallics collection.

dielle nail polish in modern goddess - somanylovelythings

I had never tried Dielle’s polishes before. The packaging is rather nice and the brush applies well. The colour is well saturated and application was smooth and dried quickly. I am using two coats. They also have a non-toxic formulation, free from toluene, formaldehyde, DBP, camphor, & pthalic acid.

I then added three dots to the side of each nail using Barry M’s foil effects in silver. Durability was very good!

If you want to try their polishes, go to Dielle’s website – they have really great colours and nice kits! You can get Dielle’s Modern Goddess here.

L’Oréal Paris new Color Riche Glitterati polishes launch and nail masterclass

Loreal color riche gliteratti nail polish

When it comes to my blog, a few things are more exciting than an event entitled Nail Masterclass, especially if it is with L’Oréal Paris.

The event took place in central London and a few bloggers had the chance to try the new Color Riche Glitterati collection and the Nails à Porter fake nails, learn to create a couple designs with L’Oréal’s nail expert Grace Humphries and find out more about L’Oréal’s new Nail Art website, nail-art.com, a portal where you can find the latest nail trends and expert tips.

Nail-Art.com

click on the image to enlarge

Nail-Art.com is full of advice, news, tutorials (easy to follow!) and has the colour expert, which is a tool where you can choose a colour and a level of difficulty and be presented with nail art ideas. They also have an app called the Color Genius, which helps you find the best make-up and nail colour for your outfit, and you can choose the match, blend and clash the suggestions! Clever, eh?

Color Riche Glitterati collection

Now, the new collection for the A/W13-14 and party season: the polishes are just gorgeous. As the name Glitterati suggests, all four shades are glitter based. What I really like about them is that you can use all as a topcoat, as an accent for nail art or on their own. They all have the Color Riche fan brush too, which is great! I swatched on the wheel with 3 coats; as you can see, the polish is very saturated with glitter. Two coats will also give a very good coverage.

Loreal giitterati collection

Sequin Extravaganza, Scarlet TInsel, Bling Bling Bang and Black Diamond

Sequin Extravaganza is an explosion of glitter colours and shapes. Clear base with mainly silver glitter in various shapes and sizes, it also has a bit of gold, blue, pink and green. This makes this polish quite multi-dimensional, and although there are so many different sizes, shapes and colours, it all sits together so well it creates the illusion of one layer. Pretty.

Scarlet Tinsel is a sea of beautiful dark pink fine glitter. It sparkles a lot and on its owns gives the nail a uniform cover.

The jellish blue base with sapphire blue glitter Bling Bling Bang is far from shy. The glitter is also a combination of small and fine with bigger circles and It has a jewel-like finish and looks amazing on its own, but also lush on black and other colours, with a little bit of colour shifting. I think I’ve been Bling Bling Bang(ed) – I actually tweeted it to L’Oréal. I have no shame.

Finally, Black Diamond is a metallic black with fine silvery glitter. It is the more discreet from the collection and looks beautiful on and it looks like asphalt when on. Like it.

Nails à Porter

We also found out about a new product L’Oréal is launching: Nails à Porter, their answer to the express manicure. The new fake nails, hitting the shelves soon, are great. To start with, they are super flexible. They come in different designs, from the classic red and French manicure to bold gold and black. It has little stickers, a great selection of sized to match your natural nails and are said to last up to five days. I will be testing them soon and posting my finds! Exciting!

As we sat in our lovely manicure stations, nail expert Grace Humphries taught us how to create two nail designs: glitter tip and glitter half-moon and French tip, which I tried on the wheel too.

I ended up painting on hand (yes, one hand. Oh the shame to take to tube back with one untidy hand!) with Black Swan and a Sequin Extravaganza gradient from the cuticles. This combination is great!

At the end, there was a nail polish pick-and-mix, where we could take the shades we liked to enter their Nail Art challenge – to which I have promptly sent my design, using loads of the polishes I took home.

It was a lovely evening, packed with news and very informative. The people were lovely, the new polishes are amazing, the nails à porter are a very interesting product. Cannot wait to keep using the polishes!

Product review: Glō Minerals lipstick

glo minerals lipstick siren - somanylovelythingsTo me, the colour on this lovely glō Minerals lipstick is better described as an old coral. It’s name is Siren and for some reason I find it quite appropriate.

This came in my glō box a while ago and has seen a lot of outings since. For a red lipstick wearer, this lippy represents a lighter option for day without going to pale.

The lipstick applies really well, it is very pigmented, glides nicely and has an ok smell – it is almost imperceptible, to be honest, and it is not sweet.

It s finish is something close to matt, but a little satin-y. It has good staying power; I like it that when it fades it leaves a bit of a stain behind, so the lips still have some colour.

This didn’t dry my lips and sometimes I use it with the glō Minerals Micro Lip liner in Pale Magenta, which is a good colour to wear with pinks and pinky corals. The liner glides and blends well with the colour, not interfering. I use it with MAC’s Impassionate too!

Packaging is very nice, just like their mascara: matte and shiny silver with a really nice weight to it.

Overall a good lippy and liner – and they have other great colours to.

To purchase the glō Minerals lipsticks and liners in these and many more colours, head to the glō Minerals website, where you will also find other great products, such as the glōLash Lengthening mascara and the glō Minerals Ultra brush (which I LOVE!).

Product review: Blank Canvas Cosmetics Double ended eye brush set

My love for make-up brushes is no secret. Since I got my first brush set (a special edition MAC face basics), I could never let go.

So it is not surprise I was extremely excited to try this handy double ended set of eye brushes from Blank Canvas Cosmetics – and what an introduction to the brand it was!

The set contains five brushes and they are all double ended, meaning you have a pro kit of eye brushes in a very slim case – and only five brushes. They are  Double Ended Pencil/Flat Shader Brush( E23/24), Blending Duo (E25/26), Double Ended Mini Detailer/Eyeliner (E27/28), Double Ended Tapered Crease Blender/Smudger (E32/33) and the Double Ended Brow/Spoolie (E30).

This is perfect to have on the go or on holidays! And the quality of the tools does not disappoint – on touch, they really reminded of my MAC brushes.  And upon use, the impression didn’t fade, especially the pencil brush (a favorite of mine for precision smoking) and the flat shader (a daily staple), which are in the same brush! The bristles are soft when they need to be, harder but gentle whey they need to be they are precise.

If I have to point out one very minor issue is that, beacuse they are double ended, sliding the brush into the elastic band holder within the case it a bit tricky, just to avoid hitting the bristles in it and damaging them. Maybe a clip holder would be better! However, I’ve been keeping them loose in the case (it is so slim they barely move anyway!).

This kit retails for £56.09, a great value of less than £6 per brush type, and guaranteed to cater for all your eye make-up needs!

Overall, I am chuffed with this set – I’ve used it so much already – and glad it came my way.

To get your hands on one of the Double ended eye brush set, go to the Blank Canvas Cosmetics website  – you can also check out their wider selection!

Nails of the week: Spotty blue and yellow

blue and yellow spotty nails - somanylovelythings

It had been a while since I had a spotty manicure on. I’ve been meaning to do one for ages, and this week I finally got round to it!

I went for a pastel colours version: blue and yellow. This blue, Oxford from Nails Inc, has been a favourite for a very long time. The yellow came in the same set, and is called Wimbledon.

blue and yellow spotty nails - somanylovelythings

I used my one of my dotting tools to get the dots close to perfect (they never are!). Overall, a very easy mani to do, and very cute.

The polishes apply ok. As they are a bit on the old side, they stained a bit. I used two coats of the blue and three of the yellow.

Extra shine was given with the Seche Vite topcoat and durability is always fantastic with Nails Inc polishes!

Simple skincare new products at London blogger event

simple skincare - somanylovelythings

New Simple products – pretty and good to the skin!

I was delighted do be invited to attend the Simple skincare blogger event which took place at Kettner’s in central London.

Basically, the evening was divided in pretty much what the Simple Sense skincare routine online tool is about; looking after your skin as a whole, including your body, inside and out,  through three points: skincare (the right products, routine, application), exercise and nutrition.

Upon arrival we were faced with a tough choice of amazing skin loving mocktails, prepared by Fiona Hunter, the Simple nutritionist. I went for a deliciously tropical mango combination and loved it.  Fiona also was at hand to create personalised smoothies (I ended up with a fantastic apple, avocado and melon mix) and give advice on particular nutritional concerns. Invaluable information!

I was introduced to the amazing new products from the Simple Kind to Skin+ range. We all know Simple has skin loving ingredients, the products are formulated for sensitive skin and they unbeatable value for money; you can rest assured the new additions don’t deviate from that.

Here’s what Simple has for you:

  • Simple Kind to Skin+Perfecting BB cream – their first ever beauty balm; it is one colour suits all and blends really well on a various skin tones, as tried by the bloggers present. RRP £8.99
  • Simple Kind to Skin+ Illuminating Radiance cream – with light reflecting minerals to capture light; brightening. RRP £8.99
  • Simple Kind to Skin+ Protecting moisturiser with SPF30 protects against UVA and UVB rays and contains sweet almond oil. RRP £6.99
  • Simple Kind to Skin+ Sun-Kissed moisturiser – for the face, gradually builds up a tan and contains vitamins E and B5. I have been using the Simple Sun-Kissed moisturiser  (read the review), and love it. This has been slightly reformulated for the line re-launch, I am told. And if it is great now, I have no doubt this will be even better! RRP £4.99
  • Simple Kind to Skin+ Radiance brightening wipes and Simple Kind to Skin+ brightening eye make-up remover pads – RRP £3.99 and £2.99 respectively.
  • Simple Kind to Skin+ moisture boost hydro mist – helps refresh and hydrate the skin throughout the day. RRP £5.99

The creams are all very light on the skin! The radiance cream delivers a very glowy effect, and is great under make up to illuminate the complexion and boy, I love a mist. My favourite, however, has to be a fantastic Protecting moisturiser with SPF 30, and I’ll say it again – with RRP of £6.99. Yes, you read right. Under £7!!! Amazing.

If all that wasn’t enough, Caroline Frazer, a make-up artist and Simple’s skin expert and brand ambassador, was at hand really drilling down on the correct four step skin routine (cleanse, tone/polish, treat and protect!) giving out personalised tips and showcasing the products.

The tough but girly personal trainer Anna Reich, who is Simple’s fitness expert (and also lovely and super funny!) was there to offer great fitness advice, as well as introduce me to face yoga – and even demonstrating some exercises to tackle most common face problem areas, dubbed as the “biceps curls for you face!”.

The principle does make sense – if you look after the muscles on your face, just like your body, they will tone and perk and this will also help delay the dreaded effects of time! I have a cheek video of Anna showing how to do one of the 18 exercises in the face yoga programme.

Top it all off with great canapés (oh-so-tasty pink macaroon with creamy goats cheese – who would’ve said, trust me, it is lush!), lovely people (other bloggers, PR and the Simple guys) and a superb goodie-bag (which will fuel the blog for quite some time!) and you have a not only a fun, fantastic evening but also a very informative one.

Cannot wait to start telling you about the products! Trial has already started!!!

Don’t forget you can create your own tailored routine at the Simple Sense online tool and the new products are hitting the shelves of retailers nationwide in September, when you can get all the info on them on the Simple website.

Product review: He-Shi Dark Foaming mousse

He-shi dark foaming mousse - somanylovelythingsFirst I tried the liquid tan from He-Shi and loved it. Thought I couldn’t really find another product that I would like as much… until I tried their dark foaming mousse.

When you pump it, the dark supple foam comes out. Application is great, the foam glides on the skin, the fact it is dark makes it easy to see where you applied and it fries very quickly. Immediately, you can see a darker tone, but this will develop over eight hours leaving you with a great glow.

It works the same way as the Express Liquid Tan I reviewed before, but I think I prefer the foam type!

The lovely colour last for about five days too, it is pretty much smell free and doesn’t transfer!

I am really in love with the He-Shi products – although I am admittedly laying off them for the moment as I have a great natural tan, fruits of my France holiday. But I will be hanging on to it, topping it up with He-Shi!

This post contains PR samples. This review, however, is based on my own true experience with the products and reflects my honest opinion on them.

Nails of the week- bright orange

orange nails - somanylovelythings

This week my nails seem like a tribute to Magic, our goldfish – they are bright orange with some golden shimmery glitter flakes. Very goldfishy!

I used Kiko’s pure orange, 280 in Orange – it is a great solid colour with a very glossy finish. Application was alright, I wish their brush was wider; the colour is well pigmented, but stains a bit, so I put two generous coats and it looked fab.

orange nails - somanylovelythings

But I don’t do simple, so I had to add a flaky on top. I used Sancion Angel Jóias do Nilo in Silex (from Brazil). This flaky has a reddish jelly base which applied colourless. The glitter flakes shift from a greeny gold to yellow gold and orange and after drying it looks a little bit matte; this polish hasn’t got that amazing shiny finish. So enters the topcoat!

Overall, I really liked the effect, durability was ace.
