“An object that embellishes the lips – the beacon of sensuality and organ of communication – has to be fairly amazing”. Well, isn’t it just?
September is a great month. Not only is it my birthday (yay!), LFW and season change (hello new outfits!), but it was also the launch month of Christian Louboutin’s gorgeous addition to his beauté range: lipsticks.
I was very excited to hear about the launch and they collection is finally here.
Apart from the expected red, the shoe designer brought out a plethora of lip colours in three finishes: matte, silky and sheer to satisfy all demanding customers willing to pay £60 for one.
As it happens with the shoes, I actually didn’t mind forking out the seemingly extortionate price. The lipstick is a work of art.
Its packaging, which draws on Middle Eastern antiques and art-deco inspiration, is flawless, heavy in solid metal; its lid is a beautifully crafted crown.
A silk ribbon comes looped to the top, to make into a necklace. Although it is doubtless beautiful enough to be a jewel, I am not totally sold on the necklace idea with the ribbon.
The box is similar to the nail varnish one and it also comes with a silk pouch to keep the precious lippy safe from scratches.
Now…. I know you are dying to read about the lipstick… it is really to die for. And I say that as the person who has a thing (or two) for red lipsticks.
My first (and I am not sure there will be a second), had to be the Rouge Louboutin, the shade of the soles, of course, in matte, my favourite finish.
The formula is surprisingly soft for a matte lipstick. It applies comfortably and feels that way throughout the wear. There is no drying (contains natural seeds and oils) or bleeding, pigmentation is very high and the colour delivered has an amazing depth; the perfect matte.
Durability is fabulous and it fades evenly. In all honesty, at first I found it bluer than I thought it would be, but a gorgeous colour, great for my skin tone nevertheless.
It’s so precious and I don’t think I can say anything else apart from that I am in love.
Just so you know, the lippy has been clinically tested and does not contain parabens, mineral oils, DEA or phthalates.
You can get you hands on them via the Louboutin website, boutiques, concessions and luxury retailers like Selfridges. I recommend you pop in to buy it.
The display is more than fabulous in its peacockiness. Do it, don;’t think about the £60. And don’t make me write that price again.
Read my review on the Louboutin Rouge nail polish here. The shoes are my latest (crazy) shoe fund(ish) purchase, Pigalle Follies Python Mika, in case you are wondering.
Here it is, as part of an outfit, with the amazing House of CB Romana cut-out black dress and Chanel handbag, worn for my birthday dinner.
And while at it, take a look at my piece about the Louboutin’s talk “Tales from beyond the red sole”, which I had the pleasure to attend a while ago.
It looks fantastic! But… £60? His shoes I can understand the price. Plus they last longer. You will never want to wear this lipstick just to make it last longer. It really is a work of art though. Stunning.

I know, I know… it’s the age-old debate… I was very torn with the nail polish, ended up caving… but with the lipstick I just had to have it.
I agree; I feel a little pang of pain every time I use it.
Having said that, the colour itself, although lovely and of extremely high quality, is not irreplaceable or my favourite red, so I will just wear whenever I feel like 😀
And yeah… £60… worth it? Probably yes for the packaging alone.
Thanks for your comment and visit!

To be completely honest for the packaging alone I would buy it tomorrow! I love everything about Christian Louboutin! So even though I’m torn about the price… I totally feel you on what you’re saying. Sometimes, with things like this, it’s ok to splurge! 😀

Indeed. I even said that in a reply to a comment just now.
Probably worth the price for the packaging alone. The red is pretty, but not my fave and definitely not an irreplaceable shade.
But I will maintain I do not regret, it’s just too pretty – and I am a sucker for packaging 😉
It’s a bit mesmerising, hehehehe
